Autumn leaves · Plate VIII
Japanese maple
Acer palmatum
A small, delicate leaf with five to seven deep, toothed lobes; palmatum means exactly that, “hand-shaped”. The leaves grow in pairs, and so do the seeds: samaras with widely spread wings.
It comes from Japan and Korea, where hundreds of varieties have been selected, and in Spain it is a garden tree rather than a street tree. In Japanese, momiji names both the maple and the leaves of autumn.
Its autumn runs from yellow and orange to crimson, depending on the variety. Going out to admire it has its own name in Japan, momijigari, a custom that dates back to the old imperial court.
