Autumn leaves · Plate II

Large-leaved lime

Tilia platyphyllos

Heart-shaped leaves with a slightly lopsided base, a toothed edge and a pointed tip. Its small fruits hang from a long, tongue-like bract that spins like a propeller as it falls, carrying them away from the tree.

This is the large-leaved lime, native to the north of the Iberian Peninsula: it grows in the Pyrenees, the Cantabrian Mountains and the Iberian System. It flowers in early summer, and its highly fragrant blossoms fill with bees.

In autumn its leaves turn yellow, from lemon to gold. In streets and parks its relative, the silver lime, is more common; it is known by the whitish underside of its leaves.
