Autumn leaves · Plate VI
Beech
Fagus sylvatica
An oval leaf with a wavy edge and five to nine pairs of straight, parallel veins, like the lines of a notebook. Its long, pointed buds give it away in winter.
In the Iberian Peninsula it grows in the north and in the mountains, and the beech woods of the Moncayo and the Central System, such as Montejo, are among the most south-westerly in Europe. Its fruit is the beechnut: a woody four-valved husk with soft spines that holds two triangular nuts.
In autumn it turns copper, orange and reddish brown, and the whole beech wood changes colour. Young beeches and clipped hedges keep their dry leaves all winter.
