Autumn leaves · Plate V

English oak

Quercus robur

A leaf with rounded lobes, broader towards the tip, with two small ear-like lobes at the base and a very short stalk. Its acorns, by contrast, hang from a long stalk: the best clue to recognise it.

It grows across almost all of Europe; in Spain, mainly in the north-west and along the Cantabrian coast, where it is called carballo or carbayo. Robur was its Latin name and also meant “strength”, after its hard wood.

It turns late, well into autumn, to golden and reddish brown. Each leaf keeps its own pace, and olive, gold and chestnut share the same branch.
