Coffee
Coffea arabica
A shrub with opposite, glossy dark green leaves with wavy edges. Its white, star-shaped flowers grow in clusters beside the leaves and smell sweet, like jasmine.
The fruits, called cherries, turn from green to yellow to red, and do not all ripen at once: cherries of several colours share the same branch. Inside each one there are usually two seeds, facing each other by their flat sides: the coffee beans.
It comes from the mountain forests of Ethiopia and nearby areas, and was first grown as a crop in Yemen centuries ago. It is one of the few coffee species that can fertilise itself with its own pollen. The word coffee comes from the Arabic qahwa, by way of Turkish.
