Parasol mushroom

Macrolepiota procera

When young, the cap is closed on top of a very long stem, like a drumstick; as it opens it becomes a cream sunshade with brown scales in circles and a dark knob at the centre. The gills are white.

The tall, slender stem, with a snakeskin pattern, ends in a bulb and carries a thick double ring that can slide up and down. Its name describes it well: Macrolepiota, “large and scaly”, and procera, “tall”.

Unlike most of the mushrooms in this collection, it does not live joined to tree roots: it breaks down leaves and grass in meadows, clearings and along paths, sometimes in rings. It appears from late summer to late autumn.

Just for the pleasure of looking: identifying mushrooms is a job for experts.
