Chanterelle
Cantharellus cibarius
Egg-yolk yellow all over, funnel-shaped with a wavy, irregular edge. Underneath it has no gills but thick, blunt ridges that fork and run down the stem, which narrows towards the base with no clear line where it begins.
It lives joined to the roots of oaks, beeches, holm oaks and pines, and appears in summer and autumn among moss and leaf litter. Its scientific name comes from the Greek kantharos, a drinking cup: Cantharellus means “little cup”.
It gives off a fruity scent that many compare to apricot. In English it is also known as girolle.
Just for the pleasure of looking: identifying mushrooms is a job for experts.
