Chives

Allium schoenoprasum

A small relative of the onion, it grows in clumps of thin, hollow, reed-like leaves. Between spring and early summer it is covered in pinkish lilac pompoms that draw bees and butterflies.

It grows effortlessly in a pot by the window: cut it and it sprouts again. Its flowers are not only pretty but edible too.

It smells of young onion, fresh and mild, without the punch of garlic. Its flowers taste the same, only more delicate.
