Spearmint

Mentha spicata

A herb with square stems and bright green toothed leaves, topped in summer with slender spikes of pale lilac flowers. It is also called garden mint; peppermint, with its stronger scent, is a hybrid of it.

It likes moisture and partial shade, and spreads cheerfully: best kept in a pot of its own. The name of the mints comes from Minthe, a nymph of Greek mythology.

It smells fresh, clean and slightly sweet, without the icy bite of peppermint: the scent of mint tea and summer afternoons.
